The Missing Standard

Ever since Arizona passed Constitutional Carry in 2010 (which was definitely a good thing), many CCW instructors have been in a race to the bottom to see who can offer the cheapest, quickest, easiest way to get a CCW in Arizona. When CCW first came to AZ in 1994, there was a 16 hour course curated, designed, and enforced by the Department of Public Safety. Then it dropped to an 8 hour course, and when Constitutional Carry passed, the standards disappeared.

In 2011, the Department of Public Safety posted their last update to their CCW course curriculum. The law now set the bar very low as far as required training goes. All you need now is to attend a course, any course, taught by an NRA certified instructor. The issue is, the NRA doesn’t authorize any of its instructors to teach law and legal or use of force segments in NRA courses unless they are specifically certified by the state to do so, or are an attorney.

Now, there are many great instructors here in AZ, but there are some terrible ones as well. How do you know if they are teaching you current, accurate, trustworthy information?

The Unofficial Standard

Enter, The Arizona Concealed Carriers Bible, a single standard available to the general public, along with corresponding resources for instructors to use. This book started out as a simple update to the 2011 DPS curriculum that I used in my concealed carry classes. After years of teaching and researching the laws, court cases, and discussing with lawyers and other instructors, concealed carriers, students, and gun owners, it had evolved. It’s not only been updated but completely overhauled.

This book presents a ton of legal information in simple to read and understand bites. It can be used as a text book, where the instructor and the student have the same book, same information, the same standard. It can be purchased by the general public for reading independently. Instructors can use it as a reference for their instruction, or they can use all the resources, power points, and exams that we offer.

“This is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.”
